Salehurst in East Sussex Village Guide

About Salehurst in East Sussex

Salehurst, mentioned in the Domesday Book, lies off the A21 about half a mile from Robertsbridge. It is small hamlet with a public house and a church.

The church of St Mary the Virgin, built in the 13th century is believed to be the largest rural parish church in Sussex. The church has several notable features, amongst which are a font carved with salamanders believed to have been given by Richard the Lionheart as gesture of thanks to the Abbot of Robertsbridge for helping secure his release from captivity on his way back from the Crusades.
